Hard hearts

Sadly I’m corresponding with several who are going through the fall of a pastor even as I write this. One is the wife of the pastor. Another is a family who has moved churches because of the pastor’s sins. These are on opposite coasts of our country. I imagine that in between these two tragedies things are no better.

One of the realities that I am becoming keenly aware of is the fact that a man (or woman) must harden their heart to the convicting work of the Holy Spirit to be able to walk boldly into this sin of adultery. It’s a sin justified with many excuses, but it requires a hard heart to be able to sin in this way. Hard hearts reflect sad choices, choices that say to the church that what they want is more important than what God wants.

Hard hearts are the consequence of a series of little choices that make us insensitive to the Holy Spirit’s conviction. Sin is easy when our hearts are hard, but God will not let sin happen without consequences.

Proverbs 29:1 is a challenging verse as the author writes, “A man who hardens his neck after much reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.” There is a point when God will address the hard heart, the stiff neck. There is a time when seeds produce fruit. As I have told many, “You will never find happiness disobeying God.”

But the hard hearts don’t believe me.

They intend to prove me wrong.

They never do.
